THE SUSSEX HERITAGE PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD
PHILIP LANCASHIRE MA RIBA
This person has been associated with Sussex for many years, an architect being involved with many projects including the successful rescue of a redundant furniture depository in Chichester and converting it into a thriving local business complex.
After this he was instrumental in rescuing a large early nineteenth century candle factory from demolition, which is now a thriving complex of shops, small retail businesses and café, now famously known as The Old Needlemakers, Lewes.
In 2008 The Star Brewery in Lewes was about to be sold to developers but this person leapt into action and arranged with others to buy the whole complex – complete with 30 flourishing craft businesses and saved the building.
In addition to these commercial projects which have not only contributed to the built environment of Sussex but also the growth of its economy, he has also designed and built several private houses including one which the Building Conservation officers thought was actually an original 18th Century cottage.
He has also over the years, turned a collection of extremely scruffy and ugly buildings into an outstanding beautiful home with a pond for wildlife and converted fields so that they produce organic sheep and hay.
Nominated by: Gillian Harwood
